We’re thrilled to welcome Beckie Caplan as the new Safety and Compliance Manager for the Canal Group.

Beckie comes to us with serious maritime credentials: she graduated from Texas A&M Galveston in Marine Transportation with a 3rd Mate Unlimited Tonnage license, and she holds a Master of Science degree from the University of Houston Clear Lake.

During her career she has held various industry roles such as Port Captain, Barge Fleet Supervisor, and Assistant Operations Manager working for companies such as Kirby Inland Marine and HMS. She’s handled operations, safety, compliance, and security for everything from inland vessels, ships, marine fueling terminals to commercial trucks. She’s also been in the thick of emergency response as part of an incident command team. Basically, if it’s in a binder labeled “Break Glass in Case of Emergency,” Beckie probably wrote it, and if its spilled, sunk, crashed, or burned, Beckie has probably responded to it.

After stepping away from the industry to earn her master’s degree and raise two kids, Beckie spent time in education—teaching students and teachers, leading workshops, and presenting at conferences.

The one thing you should know about Beckie is that her favorite place is on a boat, working alongside the crew to protect people, cargo, and the environment. We’re lucky to have someone who brings such expertise, energy, and a great sense of humor to our team.
